250 Million 3G VoIP Users by 2012, According to New Research

3g voip

The first full VoIP mobile phone (3SkypePhone) has only just been launched but already a professional research agency is forecasting that there will be 250 million users of 3G VoIP by 2012, compared with less than 100 million for voice on Wi-Fi. Considering how new VoIP on 3G is it strange to think that it will be more popular than VoIP via Wi-Fi.

The research report is produced by Disruptive Analysis Ltd., a technology focused business advisory firm. Founded by experienced analyst Dean Bubley in 2002, they provide critical commentary and consulting support to the mobile and wireless industries. Their recent clients include, Orange, Microsoft, BT and Cisco Systems.

“Yes, 250 million is a surprisingly big number,” said Dean Bubley, “I did the sums and then had to triple-check my own model.” The fundamental truth, he said, is that mobile networks are moving toward LTE (Long-Term Evolution) or possibly UMB (Ultra-Mobile Broadband), and that will be all IP, so for operators, “VoIP is mandatory.”

The times ahead will be difficult for wireless operators as the revunue from VoIP will less than is generated via standard voice calls. How will the networks make up the difference? Three are perfectly placed to take advantage of the growth in VoIP by 3G due to their strength in 3G technologies and their dedicated 3G platform. So the times ahead are looking bright for Three UK.
